where there is a choice and oh so many options.

I've got a plan!

Also, I hope all of you are doing well and enjoying summer! Cold drinks, bbqs, and good company for all.

Long live the cat.

This will, I think, warrant some elaboration. But not right now.

We should have a send off for Rebekah on Saturday the 19th. I'm happy to host again, but if anyone else has any suggestions this would be the time to float them.

I've also been updating my ChudBlog and neglecting to post here. Sorry.

Complex Variables in C^2

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm doing a little research project. I'm looking for any results in Several Complex Variables that are true in C2 but not in Cn (n>2). Have you seen any?

Such a thing is a little difficult to search for. I have found a few things, though. E. M. Chirka proved such a result in 2001. Following Chirka, G. Bharali recently did some work along the same lines. Also, Rudin has such a result in Function theory in the unit ball of Cn.

NEW GOAL
Submit application for AWM Workshop for Women Graduate Students at Joint Mathematics Meetings. Application due August 25th. Joint Meetings in early January 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Wondering what my chances are to get a poster presentation slot. Application mentions eligibility requires "substantial progress toward thesis." Wonder what "substantial" means in this context.

I do better under deadlines. Application process could be worthwhile just to have a deadline for something. Had wanted to go to JMM in January and had begun pondering funding sources. This could work out well!

Thinking I ought to inform The Advisor of this plan. I will have to ask him to write yet another letter saying nice things about my mathematics.

Anyone else out there in the æther planning on attending the Joint Meetings?

scary scary stuff

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
so i read creepypasta stuff last night b/c of the post (thanks evan;)) and was pretty creeped out cause i was dark and i was home alone at gabe's place, surrounded by tiny humanesque figures, paintings of monsters, a floppy leather face, etc, and my period came fourteen days early so when i stood up (gross out alert, esp. for all you guys) i was terrified to find blood on my leg and not know why. to top it all off, brody stood at the top of the stairs and stated meowing like crazy and refused to come into the basement with me. i dont know what the fuck he thought was down here, but after all previous events, i was thoroughly frightened.
as a completely unrelated note, anyone wanna come over and watch a movie tonight before i go pick up gabe?

Grad school questions

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Okay, hi. I'm looking at putting together an application for graduate school for the fall (yes, I know, it's really late, the department said they'd still consider an application). I have many questions which I hope you all may be able to give me some perspective on.

SOMETIMES I WONDER
Sometimes I wonder how I ended up engaged to someone so un-geeky. I wonder if these differences between us points to deep compatibility, or to a divorce in fifteen years after an explosive blowout over how one house just isn't big enough for my sci-fi DVD collection and his sports equipment.

I do tend to wonder these things more on days where I've spent my time entirely in my pajamas, alternating between watching Star Trek reruns on cable and playing video games on my computer. Days like today.

Love is weird. And amazing. But mostly weird.

Oh my goodness you guys replied the heck out of that last post! I was not expecting that! And I was inspired this morning - my friend Candace's comment made me laugh. There is no end to the delight I have in exaggerated clothing.

Back on June 23rd, I should have said Happy Birthday to Bosch, who turned 22. Well intentioned, I still forget things sometimes. A fortnight late, but Bosch, Happy Birthday!

also also also: Sorry I obviously make comics in 10 minutes sometimes

I have a job offer from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. So does Scott. And, um, I'm happy for Scott n' all, and thrilled that we'll continue to live together, but they put me in their top salary bracket. I've never even heard of that happening to first-timers without teaching degrees or TESL certification. I can't smile or have beautiful hair over the telephone, so I have no idea what I did to impress them so.

my laptop power cord broke. so no internet, no laptop use even. have to resort to coffeeshops.

but that was DAYS ago. maybe two. i get impatient. i daydream about electronics. i examine the power cord, strip off the plastic, and then decide i still can't fix it, even in my daydreams.

then another DAY goes by. then i daydream some more.

then i drink a lot of beer.

then i fix my power cord. i had alternate plans, that involved my old shitty desktop, somehow piping its DC power out to my laptop, bypassing the AC-to-DC box. thank god I didn't do that, i'm sure it would have ended in fire.

in fact, i still consider my telephone-wire-plus-tape solution to have an extremely high chance of catching fire as soon as I walk out of the room. Every two minutes I feel the air around my "solution" for heat buildup. 'cause I don't know anything about electricity. while I was patching my solution together, I had to keep reminding myself "don't touch that!" to things that were connected to electricity. Clearly this is no long-term solution, and this thing will be torn apart as soon as the real thing arrives in the mail.

basically, for this adventure and so many others, I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE.

I blame the summer heat. I don't have a fan yet, and it's too early for AC. I've already watched Wolf, X-Men, X-Men 2. I cannot sleep, ergo this was bound to happen.

Also, drinking in the summer night (when you are very hot) basically destroys the effects of alcohol in 8 beers. I am totally sober. Damn. I wasted 8 beers. Time to go try the 9th.
